इस सूत्र में प्रश्न किया गया है कि जब किसी वस्तु में विशेषता (व्यक्ति) और रूप (आकृति) दोनों होते हैं, तो क्या उसमें सामान्य (जाति) भी होती है? उदाहरण के लिए, जब मिट्टी और गाय का मिश्रण (मृद्गवक) बनाया जाता है, तो क्या उसमें जाति (सामान्य) का प्रयोग छिड़काव आदि कर्मों में किया जा सकता है? सूत्र कहता है कि छिड़काव आदि कर्मों में जाति का अनुप्रयोग नहीं होता, अतः यहाँ जाति की उपस्थिति पर प्रश्न उठता है।
