प्रमाणतः सिद्धेः प्रमाणानां प्रमाणान्तरसिद्धिप्रसङ्गः

Translation/Explanation

इस सूत्र का तात्पर्य है कि यदि प्रमाणों की सिद्धि (स्थापना) भी प्रमाण के द्वारा ही मानी जाए, तो प्रमाणों की स्थापना के लिए अन्य प्रमाण की आवश्यकता अनिवार्य रूप से उत्पन्न हो जाएगी। इससे प्रमाणों की स्थापना के लिए अनन्त प्रमाण-श्रृंखला की आवश्यकता होगी, जो तर्कसंगत नहीं है। अतः प्रमाण की सिद्धि प्रमाण से नहीं मानी जाती।

English

The meaning of this sūtra is that if the establishment of means of knowledge (pramāṇas) is itself based on another pramāṇa, then there would necessarily arise the requirement for yet another pramāṇa to establish the first, leading to an infinite regress. Therefore, the establishment of pramāṇas is not to be sought through another pramāṇa.
