Commentary (टीका)

This verse poignantly illustrates the struggle faced by aspirants on the spiritual path. Despite their initial enthusiasm and apparent detachment, they are often hindered by deep-seated desires, metaphorically described as a shark. The image of being gripped by the neck and turned back emphasizes the powerful force of unfulfilled desires (āśā). The verse serves as a cautionary tale to be wary of sudden detachment (āpāta-vairāgya) that lacks depth and true understanding of desires' nature. True vairāgya requires persistent effort and vigilance to transcend desires and reach the bhavābdhi-pāra or the shore of liberation.
