Commentary (टीका)

This verse emphasizes the necessity of ātmaikyabodha, the realization of the unity of the Self, for achieving mukti or liberation. Regardless of religious rituals, worship, or scriptural study, without self-realization, enlightenment remains elusive. This highlights Vedantic philosophy, where knowing the true self is supreme. The verse uses the metaphor of countless ages of Brahma to stress that external practices alone cannot lead to liberation—it is internal recognition of unity that matters. The verse critiques mechanical spiritual practices not grounded in self-awareness, aligning with the non-dualistic tenets of Advaita Vedanta.
