Sloka (श्लोक)

शैलूषो वेषसद्भावा भावयोश्च यथा पुमान् ।
तथैव ब्रह्मविच्छ्रेष्ठः सदा ब्रह्मैव नापरः ॥ ५५५ ॥

Transliteration (लिप्यांतरण)

śailūṣo veṣa-sadbhāvā bhāvayośca yathā pumān |
tathaiva brahmavit-śreṣṭhaḥ sadā brahmaiva nāparaḥ || 555 ||

Translation (अनुवाद)

Just as an actor remains an individual despite assuming various roles, similarly, the supreme knower of Brahman is always Brahman, not different.

Commentary (टीका)

This verse draws a metaphor between an actor and a knower of Brahman. An actor may assume various roles and exhibit different mental states, but fundamentally remains unchanged. Similarly, the brahmavit-śreṣṭhaḥ or supreme knower of Brahman, despite engaging with the diversity of the manifest world, remains intrinsically established in the brahma (Brahman). This underscores the non-dual nature (advaita) of reality, where appearances may change, but the essential truth remains constant. The verse emphasizes the realization of one's true self as brahma and not being deluded by transient identities and states.
