Translation (अनुवाद)

Due to the union with ignorance, one's bondage to the non-self arises, and this alone is the cause of worldly existence. The fire of wisdom kindled by discernment can completely burn the effects of ignorance.

Commentary (टीका)

This verse emphasizes the significance of discernment (viveka) and wisdom (bodha) in overcoming the effects of ignorance (ajñāna) that bind the soul to worldly existence (saṁsṛti). The relationship between the self and the non-self is muddled by ignorance, resulting in bondage. However, the bodha-vanḥi or the fire of wisdom, when ignited by discernment, has the capability to eradicate ignorance at its root. This highlights a core tenet of Vedantic philosophy—that liberation (mokṣa) is achieved through knowledge and self-realization.
