Commentary (टीका)

This verse emphasizes the fundamental Vedantic teaching that vidyā (knowledge) leads to the cessation of the unreal, such as worldly illusions, symbolized by 'mṛgatṛṣṇikā' (mirage). Conversely, ajñāna (ignorance) results in involvement and attachment, akin to 'pravṛtti' (action), which ultimately leads nowhere. The verse questions the tangible benefits the wise gain from ignorance-driven actions, suggesting that true wisdom yields liberation from illusions rather than engagement with them. This reflects the Vedantic insight that perception of the Self, free from illusion (māyā), is the ultimate objective.
