Commentary (टीका)

This sloka emphasizes the illusory nature of duality and affirms the ultimate reality of non-duality, which is recognized by the śruti, or scriptures. The experience of deep sleep (suṣupti) is highlighted as a natural state where the illusion of duality vanishes, and the truth of non-duality is directly perceived. This existential understanding is a cornerstone of Advaita Vedanta, suggesting that what we perceive as duality in the waking state is merely māyā or illusion. The recognition and reconciliation of dvaita (duality) with advaita (non-duality) presents a profound philosophical journey, showing that liberation involves seeing beyond the illusions of separation and realizing the oneness inherent in all existence.
