Sloka (श्लोक)

तरङ्गफेनभ्रमबुद्बुदादि
सर्वं स्वरूपेण जलं यथा तथा ।
चिदेव देहाद्यहमन्तमेतत्
सर्वं चिदेवैकरसं विशुद्धम् ॥ ३९० ॥

सर्वं स्वरूपेण जलं यथा तथा
चित् एव देह-आदि-अहम्-अन्तम-एतत्
सर्वं चित् एव एकरसं विशुद्धम्

Transliteration (लिप्यांतरण)

taraṅga-phena-bhrama-budbuda-ādi
sarvaṁ svarūpeṇa jalaṁ yathā tathā
cid eva deha-ādi-aham-antam etat
sarvaṁ cid eva ekarasaṁ viśuddham

Translation (अनुवाद)

Just as the waves, foam, mirage, bubbles, etc., are essentially water, similarly, everything from body and ego to the end is essentially pure and homogeneous consciousness.

Commentary (टीका)

This verse underlines the non-dualistic philosophy inherent in Vedantic thought. The imagery of waves, foam, mirage, and bubbles illustrates the illusory nature of all forms and manifestations, which are essentially jal (water). Similarly, the verse asserts that all distinctions, ranging from the physical body to the ego ('deha' to 'aham'), are mere illusions ('māyā') that are, in reality, one with pure consciousness or cit. This reinforces the notion that, beyond surface distinctions, there lies a singular, undivided, and pure consciousness ('ekarasaṁ viśuddham'). Understanding this leads to spiritual liberation, as one sees through the illusion of separateness, realizing that everything is the same consciousness ('cit eva').
