Commentary (टीका)

This verse illustrates the distinction between attachment and liberation. True mukti, or liberation, is impossible for those who maintain attachment to the deha (body), and other material associations. Being liberated (muktasya) involves a complete absence of identifying with the body. The analogy of waking and dreaming states serves to emphasize the impossibility of concurrent existence of attachment and liberation. Just as one cannot be asleep and awake simultaneously, neither can one be attached and liberated at the same time, underscoring the bhinna-guṇa-āśraya-tvat (distinct qualities) of these states. This highlights a fundamental Vedantic principle: liberation is an experientially distinct state characterized by a lack of worldly attachment.
