Commentary (टीका)

This verse elucidates the causal chain leading from carelessness to suffering in the life of a wise person. It emphasizes that for those who are spiritually aware, the pivotal misfortune is a lack of awareness or carelessness ('pramāda'). Such negligence leads to 'moha' (delusion), where perception becomes clouded, and true nature is obscured. This state of delusion gives rise to 'ahaṁdhī' (egoism), the false identification with the limited self. Consequently, 'bandha' (bondage) ensues, trapping the individual in cycles of desire and attachment. Ultimately, this bondage culminates in 'vyathā' (suffering). The shloka points to the importance of vigilance and self-awareness in preventing this downward spiral and maintaining liberation in one's own 'svarūpa'.
