विकारिणां सर्वविकारवेत्ता
नित्याविकारो भवितुं समर्हति ।
मनोरथस्वप्नसुषुप्तिषु स्फुटं
पुनः पुनर्दृष्टमसत्त्वमेतयोः ॥ २९५ ॥

Transliteration (लिप्यांतरण)

vikāriṇāṁ sarva-vikāra-vettā nitya-avikāraḥ bhavituṁ samarhati | manoratha-svapna-suṣuptiṣu sphuṭaṁ punaḥ punaḥ dṛṣṭam asattvam etayoḥ || 295 ||

Translation (अनुवाद)

The eternal, immutable knows all the transformations of those that change but is fit to remain unaffected. It is observed repeatedly that in dreaming and deep sleep, these transformations are nonexistent.

Commentary (टीका)

This sloka discusses the nature of the self or the ultimate reality as unchanging and eternal. Despite being the 'sarva-vikāra-vettā, or knower of all changes, it itself remains 'avikāra or unchanged. The verse illustrates that in states such as desires ('manoratha'), dreams ('svapna'), and deep sleep ('suṣupti'), the transformations of worldly states are observed to be nonexistent, emphasizing the illusory nature of the phenomenal world. The capacity to remain unchanged amidst changes is a defining quality of the Self or 'ātman', thus pointing towards the transcendental quality of consciousness that transcends the states of waking, dreaming, and deep sleep.
