Commentary (टीका)
This verse from the philosophical texts addresses the perennial confusion regarding the self ('ātman') and the non-self ('anātman'), such as the body and senses. It declares that the habitual identification of oneself with transient entities, indicated by thoughts of 'I' and 'mine', is a misapprehension ('adhyāsa'). Vidvān, or the wise seeker, must actively remove this delusion through svātma-niṣṭha, steadfastness in understanding the true self. This not only advances one spiritually but is also essential to the Vedantic practice of discrimination ('viveka'), freeing one from the clutches of ignorance ('avidyā'). Understanding this distinction forms a central pillar in the journey towards liberation ('mokṣa').
