Translation (अनुवाद)

Even with the realization of truth, the beginningless tendencies are strong, which firmly establish the doer-enjoyer identity and are the cause of worldly existence. With effort, these should be removed by dwelling in the Self with inward vision, for sages declare liberation as the diminishment of tendencies.

Commentary (टीका)

This verse emphasizes the tenacity and influence of vāsanā (latent tendencies) even upon spiritual realization. These tendencies are described as anādi (beginningless) and are deeply entrenched, obscuring the True Self by reinforcing the illusion of kartā (doership) and bhoktā (enjoyership). The root cause of saṁsāra (worldly existence) is this false identification. The process of liberation, as elucidated by the munis (sages), involves a deliberate and sustained effort to diminish these tendencies. By cultivating a pratyag-dṛṣṭi (inward vision) and constant residence in the ātman (Self), one can progressively weaken and eventually eradicate these tendencies, leading to mukti (liberation). This sloka highlights the importance of self-effort in spiritual practice and the centrality of internal vision to achieve ultimate freedom.
