Sloka (श्लोक)

नेदं नेदं कल्पितत्वान्न सत्यं
रज्जुदृष्टव्यालवत्स्वप्नवच्च ।
इत्थं दृश्यं साधुयुक्त्या व्यपोह्य
ज्ञेयः पश्चादेकभावस्तयोर्यः ॥ २४६ ॥

नेदम् नेदम् कल्पितत्वात् न सत्यं रज्जु-दृष्ट-व्यालवत् स्वप्नवत् च इत्थं दृश्यं साधु-युक्त्या व्यपोह्य ज्ञेयः पश्चात् एकभावः तयोः यः

Transliteration (लिप्यांतरण)

nedaṁ nedaṁ kalpitatvānna satyaṁ rajju-dṛṣṭa-vyālavatsvapnavacca | itthaṁ dṛśyaṁ sādhu-yuktyā vyapohya jñeyaḥ paścādekabhāvastayoryaḥ || 246 ||

Translation (अनुवाद)

This is not real as it is imagined, like the snake seen in a rope or a dream; thus by proper reasoning, one should discard the seen and realize the single reality behind them.

This *śloka* emphasizes the discernment between the imagined and the real. The illusion of a snake in a rope and the transience of a dream are metaphors used to convey the understanding that empirical observations (what is perceived) are not the ultimate truth. Through proper reasoning (*sādhu-yukti*), one must transcend the illusory appearances (*māyā*) and recognize the singular reality (*ekabhāva*), which is unchanging and eternal. Such discernment is foundational in *Advaita Vedānta*, which stresses that the perceived duality is false, and the underlying non-dual reality is the truth.
