Commentary (टीका)

This sloka from Vedantic philosophy explores the concept of *upādhi*—temporary adjuncts or limitations—and their impact on identity. The sloka asserts that just as the concepts of king and soldier rely on external associations like kingdom and shield, the sense of individual self (*jīva*) and supreme reality (*para*) also depend on their limiting adjuncts. When these adjuncts are removed, the distinct identities of supreme and individual no longer remain. This underscores the Advaitic idea that distinctions are ultimately unreal and that underlying unity is the fundamental reality. By removing the adjuncts, one realizes that neither the king nor the soldier remains distinct, symbolizing the non-duality of reality transcending individual limitations.
