Sloka (श्लोक)

केनापि मृद्भिन्नतया स्वरूपं
घटस्य संदर्शयितुं न शक्यते ।
अतो घटः कल्पित एव मोहान्
मृदेव सत्यं परमार्थभूतम् ॥ २२९ ॥

केनापि मृद्-भिन्नतया स्वरूपं घटस्य संदर्शयितुं न शक्यते । अतः घटः कल्पितः एव मोहात् मृद्-एव सत्यं परमार्थ-भूतम् ॥

Transliteration (लिप्यांतरण)

kenāpi mṛd-bhinnatayā svarūpaṁ ghaṭasya saṁdarśayituṁ na śakyate | ato ghaṭaḥ kalpita eva mohān mṛd-eva satyaṁ paramārtha-bhūtam || 229 ||

Translation (अनुवाद)

The true nature of the pot cannot be revealed as different from clay; thus, the pot is imagined due to delusion, while clay alone is the ultimate reality.

Commentary (टीका)

In this verse, the analogy of a pot and clay is used to illustrate the Vedantic principle that the material cause, like clay, is the true reality, whereas the effect, like the pot, is merely a name and form arising due to ignorance or delusion (*mohā*). Just as the pot cannot exist independently of clay, the phenomenal world is a projection upon the fundamental reality, *Brahman*. This sloka underscores the importance of recognizing the underlying reality to transcend delusion and attain spiritual enlightenment.
