Commentary (टीका)

This verse draws a powerful analogy between a deluded person mistaking the reflection of the sun in a pot of water for the actual sun, and an ignorant soul mistaking the reflected consciousness for the true self. This reflects the Vedantic idea that due to ignorance ('avidyā'), a person sees the non-self ('anatman') as the self ('ātman'). The upādhi (limiting adjuncts) create an illusion, leading to misidentification. Just as the sun remains unaffected by its reflections, the true self is undisturbed by the states of the mind and body. Understanding this distinction is crucial in Vedānta for realizing one's true nature beyond conceptual attachments and illusions.
