Commentary (टीका)

In this profound verse, the nature of the true self or ātman is elaborated. The verse states that in all states of consciousness—waking (jāgrat), dream (svapna), and deep sleep (suṣupti)—there exists a self-effulgent reality that is the core of our being. This ātman is not affected by the various transformations and appearances in the world (nānākāra-vikāra). It perpetually resonates with the knowledge of "I" (aham), as the immediate experience of self-awareness. The ātman is described as embodying eternal bliss and consciousness (nityānanda-cidātmanā). This passage urges the seeker to recognize and realize this inner essence, which is one's own true self residing in the heart (hṛdi). The philosophical implication is the acknowledgment of the constancy and unchanging nature of the ātman amidst changing states and experiences, emphasizing the practice of ātma-vichāra (self-inquiry) to perceive this truth.
