Sloka (श्लोक)

शिष्य उवाच<br />मिथ्यात्वेन निषिद्धेषु कोशेष्वेतेषु पञ्चसु । <br />सर्वाभावं विना किंचिन्न पश्याम्यत्र हे गुरो<br />विज्ञेयं किमु वस्त्वस्ति स्वात्मनात्मविपश्चिता ॥ २१२ ॥

सर्व-अभावं विना किंचित् न पश्यामि अत्र हे गुरो
विज्ञेयं किमु वस्तु अस्ति स्व-आत्मना आत्मविपश्चिता ॥ २१२ ॥

Transliteration (लिप्यांतरण)

śiṣya uvāca
mithyātvena niṣiddheṣu koṣeṣu eteṣu pañcasu ।
sarva-abhāvaṁ vinā kiñcit na paśyāmi atra he guro
vijñeyaṁ kim u vastu asti sva-ātmanā ātma-vipaścitā ॥ 212 ॥

Translation (अनुवाद)

The disciple speaks: O Guru, when these five sheaths are negated as false, I perceive nothing but total absence. What is there to be known, self-realized one?

Commentary (टीका)

In this sloka, the disciple grapples with the Vedantic teaching of the five *kośas* or sheaths—*annamaya*, *prāṇamaya*, *manomaya*, *vijñānamaya*, and *ānandamaya*—which are often expounded as layers covering the true self. The disciple, having understood their negation through *mithyātva* (falsehood), perceives only emptiness or absence. He seeks clarity from the Guru, wondering if anything remains to be known once these sheaths are dismissed. This highlights the essential question of enlightenment and realization—the discernment of what is to be understood when worldly layers are peeled away, focusing attention on the true essence or the self beyond physical and mental confines.
