Sloka (श्लोक)

योऽयमात्मा स्वयंज्योतिः पञ्चकोशविलक्षणः ।
अवस्थात्रयसाक्षी सन्निर्विकारो निरञ्जनः
सदानन्दः स विज्ञेयः स्वात्मत्वेन विपश्चिता ॥ २११ ॥

yo'ayamātmā svayaṁjyotiḥ pañcakośa-vilakṣaṇaḥ | avasthā-traya-sākṣī san nirvikāraḥ nirañjanaḥ sadānandaḥ sa vijñeyaḥ svātmatvena vipaścitā || 211 ||

Translation (अनुवाद)

This Self, self-luminous and distinct from the five sheaths, is the witness of the three states, changeless, taintless, and always blissful. It should be known by the wise as one's own true Self.

This verse succinctly captures the essence of Vedantic teachings about the nature of the *ātman* (Self). The *ātman* is described as svayaṁjyotiḥ, meaning self-luminous, illuminating itself and all else without requiring any external source. It stands apart from the pañcakośas (five sheaths) that traditionally veil the true Self, illustrating its transcendental nature beyond gross and subtle bodies. As the sākṣī (witness) to the avasthātraya (three states of consciousness: waking, dreaming, and deep sleep), the *ātman* remains nirvikāra (changeless) and nirañjana (untainted by worldly impurities). It embodies sadānanda (eternal bliss), a state of pure contentment and joy realized upon the awareness of one's true essence. For the vipaścita (wise), understanding and internalizing the Self as svātmatvena (one's very own Self) is the apex of spiritual wisdom, affirming the non-dualistic tenet that there is no separation between the individual soul and the universal consciousness.
