Sloka (श्लोक)

पञ्चानामपि कोशानां निषेधे युक्तितः श्रुतेः ।
तन्निषेधावधि साक्षी बोधरूपोऽवशिष्यते ॥ २१० ॥

pañcānām api kośānām niṣedhe yuktitaḥ śruteḥ |
tan-niṣedhāvadhi sākṣī bodharūpo'vaśiṣyate || 210 ||

Upon the negation, by reason and scripture, of the five sheaths, the witness in the form of consciousness alone remains.

This sloka illustrates a profound principle of Vedantic philosophy regarding the nature of the Self. The five sheaths (pañca-kośa) – annamaya (physical), prāṇamaya (vital), manomaya (mental), vijñānamaya (intellectual), and ānandamaya (bliss), are superimposed upon the Self due to ignorance. Through the process of logical analysis (yukti) and the teachings of the scriptures (śruti), these sheaths are negated, revealing the underlying reality. What remains, when all adjuncts are stripped away, is the sākṣī or the witness, which is pure consciousness (bodharūpa). Vedanta invites seekers to experience this ultimate truth, urging a shift in identity from the transient to the eternal. The verse is a contemplation on recognizing the essence devoid of layers of cognition, driving home the point that in essence, the Self is non-dual and beyond attributes.
