Commentary (टीका)

This sloka highlights the essence of *advaita vedānta* by asserting that the perceiver, who is of the nature of eternal bliss and awareness, is fundamentally attributed with qualities such as objectivity or duality only due to delusion. The concept of individuality (jīvabhāva) is a distortion birthed by ignorance (*moha*). Once this ignorance dissipates, the so-called individual identity dissolves, revealing the timeless, inactive, and attributeless nature of the self. The *avatāra* or nature of this essence is not real by its natural disposition, implying its transitory and ephemeral status. In essence, once ignorance is removed, realization occurs that what seemed to be the individual self was never truly existent. This understanding brings inner peace and liberation (*mokṣa*).
