Sloka (श्लोक)

देहादिनिष्ठाश्रमधर्मकर्म
गुणाभिमानः सततं ममेति ।
विज्ञानकोशोऽयमतिप्रकाशः
प्रकृष्टसान्निध्यवशात्परात्मनः ।
अतो भवत्येष उपाधिरस्य
यदात्मधीः संसरति भ्रमेण ॥ १८८ ॥

देह-आदि-निष्ठ-आश्रम-धर्म-कर्म गुण-अभिमानः सततम् मम इति । विज्ञान-कोशः अयम् अतिप्रकाशः प्रकृष्ट-सान्निध्य-वशात् परात्मनः । अतः भवति एषः उपाधिः अस्य यत् आत्मधीः संसरति भ्रमेण ॥

Transliteration (लिप्यांतरण)

deha-ādi-niṣṭhāśrama-dharma-karma guṇa-abhimānaḥ satataṁ mama iti | vijñāna-kośo'yam atiprakāśaḥ prakṛṣṭa-sānnidhya-vaśāt parātmanaḥ | ataḥ bhavati eṣa upādhiḥ asya yat ātma-dhīḥ saṁsarati bhrameṇa || 188 ||

Translation (अनुवाद)

Due to the proximity of the supreme self, constant identification with the body, caste duties, and qualities creates an illusionary ego leading to worldly wandering.

Commentary (टीका)

This verse discusses the illusionary nature of the ego (upādhi) and its implications on our self-awareness (ātma-dhīḥ). When individuals become excessively attached to their bodily identity, social duties, and qualities, this identification acts as a veiling illusion, causing the intellect's inherent brightness to be overshadowed by the ego's presence. The proximity of the parātman, or supreme self, is constant, but the individual's misidentification with transient attributes leads to a cycle of saṃsāra, or worldly wandering. This bhrama or illusion maintains the cycle of birth and rebirth, emphasizing the need to transcend such attachments to realize the true self.
