Commentary (टीका)

This sloka delves into the Vedantic concept of adhyāsa or superimposition, which describes the erroneous attribution of qualities of one thing to another, leading to misapprehension. Saṁsṛti or worldly existence, which encompasses the cycle of birth and death, is caused by this mistaken identity. The bondage created by adhyāsa is not inherent but is rather a figment conjured by ignorance, attracted by rajas (passion) and tamas (inertia). The undiscriminating mind, devoid of viveka (discernment), becomes entangled in this cycle, thus making adhyāsa the root cause of suffering, such as birth and its attendant pains. Hence, realization and discrimination are urged to dispel this inherent ignorance.
