Sloka (श्लोक)

असङ्गचिद्रूपममुं विमोह्य 
देहेन्द्रियप्राणगुणैर्निबद्ध्य ।
अहंममेति भ्रमायात्यजस्रं
मनः स्वकृत्येषु फलोपभुक्तिषु ॥ १७८ ॥

असङ्ग-चित्-रूपम्-अमुम्-विमोह्य
देह-इन्द्रिय-प्राण-गुणैः-निबद्ध्य ।
अहम्-मम-इति-भ्रमाय-आति-अजस्रं
मनः-स्व-कृत्येषु-फल-उपभुक्तिषु ॥ १७८ ॥

asaṅga-cid-rūpam-amum-vimohya
dehendriya-prāṇa-guṇair-nibaddhya |
ahaṁ-mameti bhramāyātya-jasraṁ
manaḥ sva-kṛtyeṣu phalopabhuktiṣu || 178 ||

Translation (अनुवाद)

The mind, deluded by associating the unattached consciousness with the body, senses, and life forces, is constantly bewildered with the notions of 'I' and 'mine', entangled in its own actions and their results.

This verse describes the intricate process through which the mind identifies with the body, senses, and life forces, leading to an illusion of self-identity as 'I' and 'mine'. Despite the intrinsic asaṅga (unattached) and cid-rūpa (conscious nature) of the self, it becomes entwined with deha (body), indriya (senses), and prāṇa (life forces), all through the delusive qualities or guṇāḥ. This misidentification is the crux of bhāram (illusion). The mind constantly engages in its habitual actions (sva-kṛtyeṣu), driven by desire for the fruits (phala) and their enjoyment (upabhuktiṣū). The verse provides a profound insight into the state of human delusion, where the transcendental nature is obscured by the temporal and experiential aspects of existence. Understanding and overcoming this misidentification leads to spiritual liberation.
