Translation (अनुवाद)

The mind imagines attachment to all objects, like the body and others, binding the person like an animal. Later, realizing the distasteful nature of this attachment as poison, it liberates him from the bondage.

Commentary (टीका)

This verse emphasizes the dual role of the mind in both creating and liberating from bondage. Initially, rāga (attachment) is created towards objects like the body, which binds the individual akin to an animal. This attachment is driven by the qualities that cloud judgment, signifying a lower state of consciousness. However, when realization dawns, revealing the vairasya (distaste) of such attachments as akin to poison, the same mind can lead to vimocana (liberation). This highlights the transformative power of wisdom (suvudhāya), showing that liberation from bandha (bondage) is ultimately a cognitive shift facilitated by recognizing the true nature of attachments.
