Commentary (टीका)

This sloka presents a powerful metaphor comparing the mind to a fire fueled by desires and sensory perceptions. The pañcendriya (five senses) act as hotṛs (sacrificers), continuously offering the viṣaya (objects of the senses) as ājya (ghee), sustaining the fire. The manomaya agni (mental fire) represents how unchecked desires and sensory indulgence can engulf one's life, causing suffering by consuming the prapañca or the phenomenal experiences we encounter. This illustrates the necessity of self-restraint and mindfulness in spiritual practice to overcome the fire of attachment and attain peace.
