एताभ्यामेव शक्तिभ्यां बन्धः पुंसः समागतः । याभ्यां विमोहितो देहं मत्वात्मानं भ्रमत्ययम् ॥ १४४ ॥

etābhyām eva śaktibhyāṁ bandhaḥ puṁsaḥ samāgataḥ | yābhyāṁ vimohito dehaṁ matvātmānaṁ bhramaty ayam || 144 ||
Translation (अनुवाद)
Bondage arises for a person due to these two powers by which, being deluded, he identifies the body as the self and wanders.

Commentary (टीका)
This sloka speaks to the illusion created by the identification of the self with the body, a chief cause of bondage as described in Vedantic philosophy. The two 'powers' mentioned in the verse often refer to ignorance and incorrect understanding, which lead to an individual's delusion by which they mistakenly associate the transient body with the eternal self, the ātman (आत्मा). This misidentification is what causes one to wander in the cycle of samsara (संसार), bound by desires and ignorance. The verse poignantly captures the human proclivity to mistake the corporeal frame for our true self, thus intertwining us more deeply in the worldly existence and preventing realisation of our true spiritual nature.
