तिरोभूते स्वात्मन्यमलतरतेजोवति पुमान् अनात्मानं मोहादहमिति शरीरं कलयति । ततः कामक्रोधप्रभृतिभिरमुं बन्धनगुणैः परं विक्षेपाख्या रजस उरुशक्तिर्व्यथयति ॥ १४० ॥

tirobhūte svātmani amalataratejo-vati pumān anātmānaṁ mohād aham iti śarīraṁ kalayati | tataḥ kāma-krodha-prabhṛtibhir amuṁ bandhana-guṇaiḥ paraṁ vikṣepa-ākhyā rajaḥ uruśaktiḥ vyathayati || 140 ||
Translation (अनुवाद)
When the Self is obscured, the pure Self-effulgent individual, out of delusion, identifies with the body, and thus is tormented by the powerful, distracting force of attachment, anger, and bondage.

Commentary (टीका)
This verse eloquently describes the predicament of an individual when the true nature of the ātman (Self) is obscured due to avidyā (ignorance). The person, whose true essence is pure and self-luminous, falls into the trap of identifying with the transient body and anātman (non-Self), led by delusion. Consequently, the binding energies of desire (kāma), anger (krodha), and other passions exert a powerful force (uruśaktiḥ) that causes mental turmoil, referred to here as vikṣepa, an unsettling distraction. This highlights the necessity of self-awareness and the overcoming of delusion to achieve liberation (moksha).
