Section 2 86
Self-Knowledge through Nirvikalpa Samadhi
Summary (in English)
The section expounds on the journey to self-realization through *nirvikalpa samādhi* (ascetic meditation without duality). It highlights the synergy of listening (*śravaṇa*) and mental disciplines like calmness (*śānti*) and control (*dānti*) as spiritual practices crucial for attaining the universal Self. The persistent challenge posed by latent impressions (*vāsanāḥ*) and the ego (*ahaṁ-buddhi*) is acknowledged, emphasizing that overcoming them necessitates the steadiness of *nirvikalpa samādhi*. The path demands defeating the distracting powers of ignorance (*āvaraṇa and vikṣepa śakti*), establishing clear discernment between the seer (*dṛg*) and the seen (*dṛśya*). This discrimination severs bonds of maya, leading to mokṣa (liberation), burning away the roots of rebirth through advaita bhāva (non-duality). The understanding of reality's essence removes ignorance, ending delusory suffering, thus highlighting the role of samyag-viveka (proper discrimination) in achieving self-realization and liberation.
