श्री भगवानुवाच
असंशयं महाबाहो मनो दुर्निग्रहं चलं।
अभ्यासेन तु कौन्तेय वैराग्येण च गृह्यते।।6.35।।

श्री भगवान् उवाच असंशयं महाबाहो मनो दुर्निग्रहं चलम् अभ्यासेन तु कौन्तेय वैराग्येण च गृह्यते

Transliteration (लिप्यांतरण)

śrī-bhagavān uvāca asaṁśayaṁ mahā-bāho mano durnigrahaṁ calam abhyāsena tu kaunteya vairāgyeṇa ca gṛhyate

Translation (अनुवाद)

The blessed Lord said: Undoubtedly, O mighty-armed (Arjuna), the mind is restless and difficult to control. But, O son of Kunti, it can be restrained through practice and detachment.

भगवान् बोले: हे महाबाहु अर्जुन, निःसन्देह मन चञ्चल और कठिनता से वश में होता है। किन्तु हे कुन्तीपुत्र, यह अभ्यास और वैराग्य के द्वारा नियंत्रित किया जा सकता है।

Commentary (टीका)

In this verse, the Blessed Lord recognizes the difficulty of controlling the mind, acknowledging it as restless and hard to manage. However, He provides a solution in the form of 'abhyāsa' (practice) and 'vairāgya' (detachment). Swami Sivananda's English commentary explains that constant, repeated meditation efforts help to steady the mind. The practice of focusing on a chosen ideal or Lakshya can minimize vacillation and desires. Dispassion ('vairāgya') helps to detach from sensory objects by realizing their impermanent nature.

Swami Ramsukhdas, in his Hindi commentary, emphasizes the need for sturdy patience and resolve—a reminder given to Arjuna by invoking his mother Kunti's name, known for her wisdom and detachment. Arjuna is urged to practice continuously and cultivate dispassion towards worldly enjoyments, looking for fulfillment not in perishable objects but in the eternal self. Methods of mind control and devotion are discussed, like repetitive reminders to the mind about the temporary nature of worldly joy, chanting the Lord's names, and reflecting on one's spiritual goal with steadfastness.
