Sloka (श्लोक)

शनैः शनैरुपरमेद् बुद्ध्या धृतिगृहीतया।
आत्मसंस्थं मनः कृत्वा न किञ्चिदपि चिन्तयेत्।।6.25।।

Transliteration (लिप्यांतरण)

śanaiḥ śanair uparamed buddhyā dhṛtigṛhītayā\ ātmasaṁsthaṁ manaḥ kṛtvā na kiñcid api cintayet

Translation (अनुवाद)

Gradually, one should attain tranquility with the intellect held firmly in steadiness. Having placed the mind in the self, let one not think about anything.

Commentary (टीका)

In this verse, the Bhagavad Gītā instructs practitioners on achieving peace and tranquility through gradual and deliberate detachment. The practitioner is urged to use an intellect that is controlled and steadfast (धृतिगृहीतया बुद्ध्या) to gradually withdraw (शनैः शनैः उपरमेत्) from all external distractions and to stabilize the mind within the Self (आत्मसंस्थं मनः कृत्वा). By achieving a state where the mind is focused inward, the practitioner should not let himself be disturbed by any other thoughts (न किञ्चिदपि चिन्तयेत्).

Swami Sivananda elaborates in his English commentary that this process involves gradually stilling the mind through prolonged practice and concentration on the Self. The overcoming of sensory pleasures and ceaseless practice creates an inner peace felt through constant contemplation on the Self rather than material objects.

Swami Ramsukhdas in his Hindi commentary explains that perseverance amid difficulties and faltering should be maintained by the practitioner. The firm conviction that there is no greater pursuit than realizing the Self should guide one's devotion and practice. The commentary further warns that struggles with desires or aversions should be managed by gradual detachment and not by sudden renunciations, which are not sustainable. Emphasizing undisturbed peace of the mind, Swami Ramsukhdas highlights that all directions and objects are pervaded by the eternal Self, and in understanding this, one ceases unnecessary mental activities which would otherwise bind them to worldliness.

The verse's insight reflects the importance of patience, gradual progress, and the cultivation of an inner peace unperturbed by the external world.
