यं संन्यासमिति प्राहुर्योगं तं विद्धि पाण्डव। न ह्यसंन्यस्तसङ्कल्पो योगी भवति कश्चन।।6.2।।

yaṁ saṁnyāsam iti prāhur yogaṁ taṁ viddhi pāṇḍava na hi asaṁnyasta-saṅkalpaḥ yogī bhavati kaścana
Translation (अनुवाद)
That which is called renunciation, know that to be Yoga, O Pāṇḍava. For one who has not renounced thoughts, truly, cannot be a Yogi at all.

Commentary (टीका)
This verse elucidates the integral relationship between *saṁnyāsa* (renunciation) and *yoga* (the path of union). According to Lord Krishna, they are not two separate entities but rather expressions of a singular pursuit. This is an echo of what was mentioned in Chapter 5, Verse 2.
In order to become a true *yogī*, one needs to relinquish attachment to desires and the fruits of actions (*saṅkalpa*). Swami Sivananda emphasizes that imagination and planning that arise from desire create mental restlessness. Renunciation of the fruits of actions stabilizes the mind, paving the way to *Dhyāna Yoga*. This verse encourages practitioners to see *karma yoga* (the path of action) as a necessary prerequisite to achieving higher consciousness and *dhyāna* (meditation).
Swami Ramsukhdas in his Hindi commentary reinforces this by explaining that both the *saṁnyāsī* and the *karma-yogī* are equal in their renunciation, with neither differentiating from the other in their ultimate goals. The abandonment of all material attachments and internalization of one’s eternal connection with the divine leads to the realization of yoga. Without this realization, any spiritual practice loses its essence and becomes mere indulgence.
This sloka therefore suggests that renunciation and yoga lead to the same goal and are transformational paths to realize one's eternal truth. It underscores the necessity of inner detachment for spiritual growth and realization of one's true self.
