Sloka (श्लोक)

नात्यश्नतस्तु योगोऽस्ति न चैकान्तमनश्नतः।
न चातिस्वप्नशीलस्य जाग्रतो नैव चार्जुन।।6.16।।

Transliteration (लिप्यांतरण)

nāty-aśnataḥ tu yogo' sti na caikāntam anaśnataḥ। na cāti-svapna-śīlasya jāgrato naiva cārjuna।।6.16॥

Translation (अनुवाद)

There is no Yoga for one who overeats or does not eat at all, O Arjuna, nor for one who sleeps too much or stays awake excessively.

अत्यधिक भोजन करने वाले तथा बिलकुल न खाने वाले योग के योग्य नहीं होते। हे अर्जुन! उसी तरह बहुत अधिक सोने वाले और अत्यधिक जागने वाले भी योग के लिए अयोग्य हैं।

Commentary (टीका)

This shloka from the Bhagavad Gita stresses the importance of moderation in diet and sleep for the practice of Yoga. It notes that neither excessive eating nor complete fasting is conducive to Yoga. Similarly, neither oversleeping nor excessive wakefulness aids in Yoga practice. The commentary by Swami Sivananda highlights the notion that a balanced lifestyle supports the spiritual seeker in achieving success in Yoga. This includes moderate eating, where the stomach should be partially filled with food, some with water, and the rest left empty for air. On sleep, it also advises maintaining a balance – avoiding excessive sleep that causes lethargy, and insufficient sleep that results in drowsiness and hampers meditation. Swami Ramsukhdas expands on the idea by explaining the negative effects of such imbalances on one's ability to practice Yoga successfully. Excessive eating leads to heaviness and diseases, while not eating enough results in weakness. Similarly, too much sleep leads to lethargy while too little sleep causes lack of focus.
