Sloka (श्लोक)

इहैव तैर्जितः सर्गो येषां साम्ये स्थितं मनः।
निर्दोषं हि समं ब्रह्म तस्माद्ब्रह्मणि ते स्थिताः।।5.19।।

इह एव तैः जितः सर्गः येषाम् साम्ये स्थितं मनः निर्दोषं हि समं ब्रह्म तस्मात् ब्रह्मणि ते स्थिताः

Transliteration (लिप्यांतरण)

ihaiva tairjitaḥ sargo yeṣāṃ sāmye sthitaṃ manaḥ | nirdoṣaṃ hi samaṃ brahma tasmād brahmaṇi te sthitāḥ ||5.19||

Translation (अनुवाद)

In this life itself, the cycle of birth and death is conquered by those whose minds are established in equality. Indeed, Brahman (the absolute reality) is flawless and equal, and thus they are established in Brahman.

Commentary (टीका)

The essence of this sloka underscores the significance of mental equanimity and realization of Brahman, the ultimate reality. When one's mind is firmly established in equality—free of biases, preferences, and dualities—they transcend the cyclical nature of birth and death. This refers to achieving moksha, liberation from the saṁsāra (cycle of worldly existence).

In Swami Sivananda's commentary, it is highlighted how conquering birth and death is synonymous with the realization of Brahman, which is immutable, flawless, and without distinction. Brahman inherently resides in all beings with equal presence, untouched by the differences of high or low, worthy or unworthy.

Swami Ramsukhdas elaborates on how this equipoise is not an externally imposed state but one that naturally arises in a wise person who transcends worldly desires and dualities. When there is no distinguishable difference in perception, the person is said to be established in their true nature, which is Brahman.

This state of 'स्वाधीनता' or complete independence from external influences is marked by absence of desires and realization of self-sufficiency in the self—the very essence of Brahman. The assertion "इहैव" emphasizes the possibility of attaining this jñāna (knowledge) or moksha (liberation) within this life itself, casting aside any notion of difference, duality, and disharmony within one's consciousness.

In summary, this verse calls for the realization of one's inner state of equality, where the mind is unperturbed, and in this steady state is found liberation, being one with the flawless Brahman.
