Translation (अनुवाद)

Activities performed without selfish motives, dedicated to a higher cause such as sacrifice (yajña), do not bind individuals to the cycle of karma. Consequently, O Kaunteya (Arjuna), perform your duties without attachment, for the sake of dedication to the divine.

The essence of the sloka points to the importance of performing actions as a duty without attachment to the outcomes, aligning them to the larger framework of sacrifice or higher purpose—this is referred to as yajñārtha. Instead of being bound by personal gain which leads to karma-bandhana (bondage of actions), one should act for a selfless higher cause. Swami Sivananda further clarifies that any action performed with unselfish intent contributes to the purification of one's heart, detaching them from the bindings of saṁsāra (birth-death cycle). On the other hand, Swami Ramsukhdas emphasizes common misconceptions about duty, encouraging actions for parahit (betterment of others), which ultimately leads to one's own spiritual growth. The Hindi commentary elaborates how true karma-yoga entails performing every action for the benefit of others, not oneself, emphasizing sattvic detachment as imperative for liberation. By relinquishing selfish desires, one aligns their purpose with dharma, contributing to spiritual progress and internal satisfaction, thereby breaking free from cyclical existence. ```
