Sloka (श्लोक)

इन्द्रियस्येन्द्रियस्यार्थे रागद्वेषौ व्यवस्थितौ।
तयोर्न वशमागच्छेत्तौ ह्यस्य परिपन्थिनौ।।3.34।।

पदच्छेद / Padaccheda

- इन्द्रियस्य इन्द्रियस्य अर्थे - राग-द्वेषौ - व्यवस्थितौ - तयोः न वशम् आगच्छेत् - तौ हि अस्य परिपन्थिनौ

Transliteration (लिप्यांतरण)

indriyasya indriyasya arthe rāga-dveṣau vyavasthitau, tayoḥ na vaśam āgacchet tau hy asya paripanthinau.

Translation (अनुवाद)

Each sense organ has inherent attachment (rāga) and aversion (dveṣa) towards its objects. One should not come under the control of these emotions, as they are verily the enemies that disrupt one’s spiritual path.

प्रत्येक इन्द्रिय का अपने-अपने विषयों के प्रति राग और द्वेष होता है। इन दोनों के अधीन नहीं होना चाहिए, क्योंकि ये वास्तव में उसके आध्यात्मिक मार्ग के शत्रु हैं।

These natural tendencies can drag an individual into a cycle of desire and negativity, which can obstruct spiritual progress. It is advised that a practitioner of spiritual disciplines should introspect and prevent falling under the influence of these dual forces. Mastery over *rāga* and *dveṣa* is pivotal for a seeker to achieve tranquility of the mind, leading to liberation (*moksha*). Therefore, it stresses the importance of discrimination (*viveka*) and self-inquiry (*vichāra*) to rise above these tendencies, allowing one to act according to dharma instead of being driven by sensory preferences. Swami Sivananda and Swami Ramsukhdas emphasize reducing identification with one's sensory nature and fostering divine consciousness to transcend such obstacles effectively.
