Commentary (टीका)
According to the commentary by Swami Sivananda, the soul which knows the truth recognizes that the self, Atman, is distinct from the transactional qualities (Guṇas) and actions (Karma). It recognizes that the sense organs, driven by these qualities, interact with the sense objects. Knowing this, the wise individual does not become attached to the actions.
Swami Ramsukhdas in his Hindi commentary elucidates that individuals deluded by ego are different from the enlightened ones who know the divisions of qualities and actions. Everything in the universe is born out of nature's qualities – the Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. These qualities and actions (processes) are ever-changing, unlike the unchangeable conscious self. Realizing this difference, one should not consider themselves the doer. It is the qualities and the processes of nature that function and the thoughtful one observes this without attachment. Both paths of knowledge, Gyana Yoga and Karma Yoga, highlight the importance of non-attachment to achieve spiritual realization. ```
