Sloka (श्लोक)

मूल श्लोकः भयाद्रणादुपरतं मंस्यन्ते त्वां महारथाः। येषां च त्वं बहुमतो भूत्वा यास्यसि लाघवम्।।2.35।।

Transliteration (लिप्यांतरण)

bhayād raṇād uparataṁ maṁsyante tvāṁ mahārathāḥ। yeṣāñ ca tvaṁ bahumato bhūtvā yāsyasi lāghavam।।2.35।।

Translation (अनुवाद)

The great warriors will think that you have withdrawn from battle out of fear. Being highly esteemed by them, you will fall into disgrace.

Commentary (टीका)

In this verse, Lord Krishna points out to Arjuna that if he withdraws from the battle due to fear, the renowned warriors (mahārathāḥ) who hold him in high regard (bahumata) will mistakenly perceive his action as one of cowardice (due to bhayāt, fear) and not from a place of compassion or honorable intention. This perception will lead to a loss of esteem and recognition (lāghavam), turning what once was respect into contempt. Arjuna is reminded of the reputational impact his actions can have not only on himself but also on others' perception of his courage and duty (dhārmic responsibility).

In the English commentary by Swami Sivananda, Duryodhana and others may misjudge Arjuna's motivations, believing it to be fear rather than noble intentions. Similarly, the Hindi commentary by Swami Ramsukhdas emphasizes that departing from battle would bring dishonor, as it defers from Arjuna's duty as a Kshatriya—war being his "dharma" (duty) toward which he is naturally inclined. The text focuses on societal perception, reputation, and the dual nature of action in the field of dharma.
