Some see the Self as a wonder, some speak of it as wonderful, yet others hear of it and are amazed. Yet, even after hearing about it, no one really knows it.

The sloka describes the intrinsic and elusive nature of the Self, which is viewed with wonder and amazement by those who endeavor to comprehend it. This Self-realization is inherently difficult as it transcends ordinary experience and knowledge. The Self is not palpable to the senses or comprehensible through the mind, thus creating a unique challenge in its realization and understanding.
According to Swami Sivananda’s commentary, those who perceive, speak, and hear about the Self represent a minority, emphasizing the rarity and sacredness of Self-realization. This profound perception as an ‘āścarya’ (wonder) indeed elucidates the special spiritual insight required to know oneself authentically.
Swami Ramsukhdas elaborates how the Self can't be apprehended like other mundane entities because it isn’t an object of sensory perception. Unlike ordinary knowledge that depends on external validation, Self-knowledge is self-evident, needing no instruments beyond one's existential realization. This sloka thus underscores the exceptional, almost mystical endeavor of recognizing our true essence—an endeavor not accessible to mere hearing and intellectual understanding but through profound inner realization.
