अच्छेद्योऽयमदाह्योऽयमक्लेद्योऽशोष्य एव च। नित्यः सर्वगतः स्थाणुरचलोऽयं सनातनः।।2.24।।

Translation (अनुवाद)
This (Self) cannot be cut, cannot be burnt, cannot be wet, cannot be dried. It is eternal, all-pervading, stable, unchangeable, and ancient.

Commentary (टीका)
The sloka describes the transcendent qualities of the Self (*ātman*). The Self is praised for its immutable nature, being beyond the decay and destruction that characterize the physical world. As Swami Sivananda elaborates, the Self cannot be cut by weapons, burnt by fire, wetted by water, or dried by wind, signifying that it transcends all elemental influences. It is eternal (*nitya*), omnipresent (*sarvagata*), unchanging (*sthāṇu*), and immovable (*acala*), always existing beyond time (*sanātana*).
Swami Ramsukhdas in his Hindi commentary stresses that the Self is fundamentally distinct from the body which can be altered or destroyed. The Self's perpetuity and stability highlight its separation from temporal and spatial constraints. The human-like qualities perceived in its description are metaphorically used to help the seeker internalize the idea of the Self's immutability—pointing to its constant being amidst the workings of the variable world. In essence, the sloka articulates the Self's untouchable, imperishable, and eternally existent nature, which is vital for comprehending its distinction from transient existence.
