Commentary (टीका)
The sloka highlights the consequences of the neglect of societal and familial duties. According to the English commentary by Swami Sivananda, the destruction of family structures and the resultant intermingling of castes disrupts societal norms and duties. The Hindi commentary by Swami Ramsukhdas elaborates that the destruction of family leads to the breakdown of family traditions (kula-dharma) which results in the increase of unrighteousness. In turn, this results in the moral degradation of women and the rise of inter-caste offspring.
- Doṣa* (defects) here refers to the wrongful actions of those who destroy family integrity (*kula-ghna*), leading to intermixed offspring (*varṇa-saṅkara-karaka*). This leads to the disintegration of eternal social and religious duties specific to one's birth, as well as those specific to family traditions.
The passage addresses the imperative nature of maintaining one's *jāti-dharma* (caste duties) and *kula-dharma* (family duties), as their neglect not only leads to individual degradation but to societal and cultural disintegration on a larger scale.
