Commentary (टीका)
The provided sloka offers a vivid description of the emotional moment when Arjuna, also known as Partha, surveys the battlefield before the onset of the Kurukshetra war. In this poignant scene, Arjuna recognizes various familial relations among those assembled—his fathers, grandfathers, teachers, maternal uncles, brothers, sons, grandsons, and friends. This realization plays an important role in Arjuna's internal conflict about fighting against his own family members, highlighting the complexity of the emotions involved in a righteous war (Dharmayuddha). Swami Sivananda points out that the enumeration of these relations evokes a sentiment of connectedness, providing a basis for Arjuna’s hesitation. Swami Ramsukhdas elaborates by naming specific family relations visible to Arjuna, illustrating the deep familial ties present on the battlefield. The sloka and its context underscore the central theme of duty versus emotion, a core issue in the Bhagavad Gita discourse.
