त्रिणाचिकेतस्त्रिभिरेत्य सन्धिं त्रिकर्मकृत्तरति जन्ममृत्यू । ब्रह्मजज्ञं देवमीड्यं विदित्वा निचाय्येमाँ शान्तिमत्यन्तमेति ॥ १७ ॥

Translation/Explanation
Hindi: तीन प्रकार के नचिकेतस् (अर्थात् जो नचिकेतस् अग्नि को तीन बार करता है), जो तीनों से संयुक्त है (तीन साधनों या संबंधों के साथ), और जो तीन प्रकार के कर्म करता है (यज्ञ, वेदपाठ, दान), वह जन्म और मृत्यु के बंधन को पार कर जाता है। ब्रह्मा से उत्पन्न, तेजस्वी, पूजनीय अग्नि को जानकर और उसे अपने आत्मा के रूप में पहचानकर, वह परम शांति को प्राप्त करता है।
English: The tri-fold triṇāciketaḥ, united with the three (means or connections), and performing the threefold karma (sacrifices, recitation of the Vedas, and charity), crosses over birth and death. Knowing the brahmajajña, the fire born of Brahman (Hiraṇyagarbha), the luminous and īḍya (worthy of praise), and realizing him as his own ātman, he attains the ultimate śānti (peace).
Commentary
Again he praises karma; the tri-fold triṇāciketaḥ, i.e., he by whom the Nachiketas fire has been kindled thrice; or, he who knows, studies and performs in, the Nachiketas fire. United with the three, i.e., who united with his mother, father and preceptor, i.e., having duly received instruction from them; for, that such instruction is a source of authority, is inferred from other śruti-s, such as ‘he who has a mother’ and ‘he who has a father,’ etc. or, the three may refer to ‘direct perception,’ ‘inference’ and ‘āgama-s’ or to ‘the veda-s,’ ‘the smṛti-s’ and ‘good men’; for, knowledge of virtue from these sources is an obvious fact. Doing the threefold karma, i.e., performing sacrifices, reciting the veda-s, and making gifts. Whoso does these, crosses or travels beyond birth and death; again brahmajajña: brahmaja means born of Brahma, i.e., Hiraṇyagarbha; he who is born of Brahma and is omniscient is brahmajajña. deva, so called because shining, i.e., having the qualities of knowledge, etc. īḍya, worthy of praise. Knowing such fire, from the śāstra-s and having realized him as his own ātman, one attains this absolute renunciation which is realized in his intellect. The meaning is that one attains the place of the virāṭ, by the continued practice of upāsana and karma.
