Translation/Explanation

English: (Death says:) O Naciketas, I will declare that knowledge to you; attend carefully to what I say. I know the agni that leads to svarga; know this agni, which is the means for attaining svarga, the attainment of endless worlds, and the very support of the universe, established in the guhā (the cave of the intellect/heart).

Commentary

This is Death’s declaration. I will tell thee what has been solicited by thee; attend to what I say with concentrated mind. I know the agni, O Naciketas, which helps one to svarga; ‘I will tell thee and attend’ are expressions used to concentrate the disciple’s intellect; now he praises the agni, know this agni as leading to svarga and as the stay of the universe in its form of virāṭ and as located in the intelligence of knowing men.
