Translation/Explanation

English: What you perceive as distinct from dharma and adharma, as distinct from kṛta (effect) and akṛta (cause), as distinct from bhūta (the past) and bhavya (the future)—tell me that. Here, Naciketā asks Yama about that Reality which is beyond all actions, their results, the relation of cause and effect, and beyond time (past, future, and present). He seeks knowledge of that Ātman or Brahman which transcends all worldly experience, is pure, and unchanging.

Commentary

If I am worthy, and you are, O Bhagavan, pleased with me: other than virtue, i.e., different from the performance of acts enjoined by the śāstra, their fruits and their requisites and similarly from vice; other than what is made, i.e., effect; and what is not made, i.e., cause; and again other than the past, i.e., time gone by; and the future, i.e., time yet to come; and similarly the present, i.e., what is not conditioned by time (past, present and future); if you see or know anything like this, beyond the reach of all worldly experience, tell me that.
