तं दुर्दर्शं गूढमनुप्रविष्टं गुहाहितं गह्वरेष्ठं पुराणम् । अध्यात्मयोगाधिगमेन देवं मत्वा धीरो हर्षशोकौ जहाति ॥ १२ ॥
taṃ durdarśaṃ gūḍhamanupraviṣṭaṃ guhāhitaṃ gahvareṣṭhaṃ purāṇam | adhyātmayogādhigamena devaṃ matvā dhīro harṣaśokau jahāti || 12 ||

जो धीर पुरुष उस प्राचीन, कठिन से देखे जाने वाले, छिपे हुए, भीतर समाए हुए, हृदय की गुहा में स्थित, गहरे स्थान में निवास करने वाले दिव्य आत्मा को, आत्म-योग (आध्यात्मिक साधना) की प्राप्ति द्वारा जान लेता है, वह हर्ष और शोक दोनों को त्याग देता है।
English
The dhīraḥ (wise person), having realized through adhyātma-yoga (discipline of the Self) that deva (divine Self) who is purāṇa (ancient), durdarśa (hard to perceive), gūḍha (hidden), anupraviṣṭa (entered within), guhāhita (placed in the cave of the heart), and gahvareṣṭha (dwelling in the deep recess), abandons both harṣa (joy) and śoka (sorrow).
Commentary
The ātman which you wish to know is hard to see, being extremely subtle, lodged in the inmost recess, being concealed by the modifications of consciousness caused by worldly objects. Located in intelligence (being realized, as if there lodged) and seated amidst manifold miseries. Being lodged in the inmost recess and located in intelligence, he is seated amidst miseries; (being thus seated he is hard to see). Dwelling on that ancient ātman, with a mind weaned from all external objects and concentrated on the ātman, the dhīraḥ (wise person) abandons harṣa (joy) and śoka (sorrow), as there is neither superiority nor inferiority for the ātman.
