Translation/Explanation

English

Like Vaiśvānara (the fire principle), a Brāhmaṇa guest enters homes; good people appease his intensity by offering śānti (peace, appeasement). O Vaivasvata (Yama)! bring water for the guest.

Commentary

Thus addressed, the father sent him to Mṛtyu (Death) to keep his word, and he, having gone to the mansion of Mṛtyu, fasted for three nights, as Mṛtyu was away. When Mṛtyu had gone and returned, his ministers or wife said to inform him: "A Brāhmaṇa guest, verily like Agni itself, enters houses, burning them; and good people, to allay his burning heat as that of Agni, propitiate him by giving udaka (water) to clean his feet, a seat to sit upon, etc. Therefore, O Vaivasvata! fetch udaka to be given to Naciketā; also because evil consequences are declared in default."
