Padaccheda

Translation (अनुवाद)

He who performs actions (karmaṇi) by placing them in Brahman (brahmaṇi), abandoning attachment (saṅgam), is not tainted (lipyate) by sin (pāpena), just as the lotus leaf is untainted by water (padmapatram iva ambhasā).

The essence of this shloka is echoed in understanding the profound significance of performing actions (karmāṇi) as an offering to the divine, embodied as Brahman (brahmaṇi). The act of offering connotes a relinquishment of personal ownership over one's actions and their outcomes. By abandoning attachment (saṅgam tyaktvā), and thus, personal desire and expectation related to the fruits of actions, an individual can transcend the blemish of sin (pāpena).

The metaphor of the lotus leaf (padmapatram) illustrates this state of non-contamination: despite residing in water, it remains untouched by it. Similarly, the individual who surrenders all actions as offerings while maintaining detachment can navigate the world sinlessly. This highlights the essence of niṣkāma karma (selfless action devoid of desire).

The concepts of saṁsāra (worldly entanglements) are addressed with the notion that attachment is the root of bondage, as iterated in the cultural context of the Gita. The act of internal renunciation, prioritizing divine dedication over worldly gain, propagates spiritual liberation, and purity of action. The solution to worldly afflictions (saṁsāra-dāvānal) lies in overcoming attachment and embracing one's existence and action as offerings to the supreme consciousness which is ultimately liberating and purifying.
